Rainbow Beach lives up to its name with towering sand cliffs that shift through a spectrum of ochre, orange and deep red – a stunning natural palette that meets the sparkling Coral Sea. This laid-back coastal town on Queensland's Sunshine Coast is the launchpad for the world-famous Fraser Island (K'gari), but it's a destination in its own right, offering wild beaches, freshwater lakes and a relaxed, barefoot vibe.
Highlights & What to See
- Rainbow Beach Coloured Sands – The dramatic, multi-hued cliffs are the town's namesake. Best viewed from the beach at low tide, they're a photographer's dream and a unique geological wonder.
- Carlo Sand Blow – A vast, moon-like sand dune that feels like a desert beside the sea. Climb to the top for panoramic views of the coastline, Double Island Point and the distant Fraser Island.
- Fraser Island (K'gari) 4WD Tours – Rainbow Beach is the southern gateway to the world's largest sand island. Join a tag-along tour or self-drive (with a permit) to explore Lake McKenzie, Eli Creek and the Maheno Wreck.
- Hiking in Great Sandy National Park – The Cooloola section offers coastal walks through scribbly gum forests and past hidden lakes. The 5.6km return walk to the coloured sands is a must.
- Whale Watching (seasonal) – From July to November, humpback whales migrate close to shore. Take a cruise from Rainbow Beach for up-close encounters.
- Dolphin and Turtle Spotting – The waters around the beach are rich with marine life. Kayak or paddleboard among the dolphins in the sheltered waters of Tin Can Bay.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow at least two full days to experience Rainbow Beach properly. Spend the first day exploring the coloured sands, Carlo Sand Blow and a short walk in the national park. Dedicate the second day to a full-day 4WD trip to Fraser Island (K'gari) – tours depart daily. If you have a third day, add a kayak trip in Tin Can Bay or a scenic flight over the sand islands.
