Moreton Island is a wild, sandy escape just off Brisbane's coast, where turquoise lagoons and towering dunes create a playground for adventurers. With no sealed roads, the island feels gloriously remote—you'll explore by 4WD or on foot, discovering shipwrecks perfect for snorkeling and whales breaching offshore. This is the kind of place where you trade city noise for the roar of the ocean and the crunch of sand underfoot.
Highlights & What to See
- Tangalooma Wrecks – Fifteen sunken ships form an artificial reef teeming with fish, turtles, and rays. Snorkel or dive right off the beach.
- Mount Tempest – At 280 metres, it's the world's highest coastal sand dune. The 45-minute climb rewards you with panoramic views of the island and Moreton Bay.
- Blue Lagoon – A crystal-clear freshwater lake surrounded by paperbark trees. Perfect for a refreshing swim after a hike.
- Desert Sand Dunes – Sandboard down the massive, golden dunes—a thrilling ride for kids and adults alike.
- Whale Watching – Humpback whales migrate past the island from June to November. Join a tour or spot them from Cape Moreton lighthouse.
- Kayaking & Paddling – Paddle through the calm waters of the western side, often alongside dolphins and dugongs.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors come for a day trip from Brisbane or the Sunshine Coast, but to truly experience Moreton Island, stay at least two days. Overnight at Tangalooma Island Resort or camp on the beach, allowing time for a 4WD tour, a snorkel at the wrecks, and a sandboarding session. If you're short on time, a full day can still cover the wrecks, a dune climb, and a lake swim—but you'll wish you had longer.
