Mary River

Flowing through the lush hinterland of the Sunshine Coast, the Mary River is a serene waterway that offers a quintessential slice of subtropical Queensland. Its dark, tannin-stained waters wind through ancient rainforests, farmland, and small historic towns, creating a peaceful escape for canoeists, birdwatchers, and those seeking a slower pace. The river is also a vital habitat for the endangered Mary River turtle, which can be spotted basking on logs in the summer months.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow at least half a day to explore a section of the river, such as a short canoe trip from Kenilworth or a stroll along the Maryborough riverfront. For a full immersion, plan a two-day self-guided kayaking trip from Kenilworth to Tiaro, camping overnight on a sandbank. If you're combining it with other Sunshine Coast attractions, a day trip from Noosa is easily doable, but the river's charm rewards a more relaxed pace.
