Kondalilla National Park is a lush, subtropical rainforest sanctuary on the Sunshine Coast hinterland, famous for its dramatic waterfalls and cool mountain streams. The park’s name comes from the Aboriginal word for “rushing waters,” and you’ll hear that sound long before you see the main cascade. With walking trails that range from family-friendly loops to more challenging descents, it’s a perfect escape into nature within easy reach of the coast.
Highlights & What to See
- Kondalilla Falls: The park’s centrepiece – a 90-metre drop into a deep, emerald pool. The lookout offers a classic photo op, and if you’re up for a steep return climb, you can swim in the rock pool below.
- Picnic Creek Circuit: A 4.8 km loop that winds through towering piccabeen palms, strangler figs, and past several smaller cascades. It’s the best way to soak up the rainforest atmosphere without a huge time commitment.
- Swimming Holes: Besides the base of Kondalilla Falls, there are several natural rock pools along Skene Creek – perfect for a refreshing dip after a hike.
- Birdwatching & Wildlife: Keep an eye out for satin bowerbirds, whipbirds, and if you’re lucky, a platypus in the quieter pools at dawn or dusk.
- Kondalilla Falls Lookout: An easy 500 m walk from the car park gives you a sweeping view of the valley and the falls plunging into the gorge.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is ideal – arrive early to secure a car park (it fills up quickly on weekends). Spend 2–3 hours on the Picnic Creek Circuit with a swim break, then enjoy a picnic lunch at one of the shaded tables near the entrance. If you only have an hour, do the short walk to the lookout and back. The park is at its best after rain when the waterfall is thundering, but even in dry months the pools are inviting.
