Stretching from the shimmering waters of the Sunshine Coast to the vast sand islands of the south-east, Great Sandy National Park is a raw, untamed wilderness of colossal dunes, ancient rainforests and pristine beaches. This is where you’ll find the famous coloured sands of the Cooloola section and the wild, wave-lashed shores of Fraser Island (K’gari) – a World Heritage-listed paradise. Whether you’re four-wheel-driving along the beach, paddling a crystal-clear creek or simply soaking in the solitude, this park delivers an unforgettable encounter with nature.
Highlights & What to See
- K’gari (Fraser Island): The world’s largest sand island, with rainforest growing on dunes, perched lakes like Lake McKenzie, and the eerie wreck of the SS Maheno. Explore by 4WD, hike the Great Walk or swim in Champagne Pools.
- Cooloola Section: Home to the spectacular coloured sands of the Cooloola Sandpatch, the pristine Noosa River and the remote Double Island Point lighthouse. Kayak the river or drive the beach highway.
- Teewah Beach and Rainbow Beach: A 4WD playground with towering sand cliffs and access to the park’s northern reaches. Stop at the Carlo Sandblow for panoramic views.
- Bushwalking and Wildlife: Walk the Cooloola Wilderness Trail or the short Pile Valley circuit on K’gari. Spot dingoes, sea eagles, and migrating humpback whales (June–November).
Suggested Time to Spend
To truly experience Great Sandy National Park, allow at least 2–3 days. Spend one day exploring K’gari’s highlights (take a guided tour or a 4WD vehicle) and another day in the Cooloola section, combining a river kayak with a drive to the sandpatch. If you're short on time, a day trip from Noosa to the Cooloola section is doable, but you’ll only scratch the surface. For a deeper immersion, camp overnight at one of the park’s designated sites – the starry skies are phenomenal.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Noosa: The sophisticated coastal town at the park’s southern gateway, with its national park, chic dining and surf beaches. Perfect for a pre- or post-wilderness stay.
- Australia Zoo: The legendary zoo founded by Steve Irwin, located in Beerwah – a fun family detour en route from Brisbane or the Sunshine Coast.
- Sunshine Coast Hinterland: Charming villages like Montville and Maleny, with lush rainforest, waterfalls and art galleries – a serene contrast to the coastal dunes.
