Fraser Island, or K’gari as it’s known to the Butchulla people, is the world’s largest sand island and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here, ancient rainforests rise out of pure silica sand, crystal-clear lakes perch atop dunes, and wild dingoes roam pristine beaches. It’s a paradise for self-drive adventurers, offering a raw, untamed slice of Queensland that feels a world away from the Sunshine Coast’s polished resorts.
Highlights & What to See
- Lake McKenzie – a perched lake with impossibly white sand and shimmering aqua water; perfect for a swim or simply soaking up the surreal beauty.
- Seventy-Five Mile Beach – the island’s highway, where you can spot the rusted remains of the Maheno shipwreck and watch dingoes trot along the surf.
- Eli Creek – a fast-flowing freshwater creek that you can float down on a lazy inner-tube journey through paperbark forest.
- Rainbow Gorge & Central Station – walk among towering satinay and brush box trees, remnants of the ancient rainforest that thrives on sand.
- Indian Head – a rocky outcrop offering panoramic views and a prime spot for spotting sharks, rays, and sea turtles below.
Suggested Time to Spend
Three to four days is ideal to truly explore Fraser Island. A self-drive trip (with a 4WD – essential) allows you to hit the highlights at your own pace, while tag-along tours offer a guided experience. Plan at least two nights camping or in one of the eco-resorts to wake up to the sound of the ocean and have time for both the inland lakes and the beach drives.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Noosa – the Sunshine Coast’s chic coastal town, with its national park walks and riverfront dining, is a perfect launch point for a Fraser Island trip.
- Australia Zoo – the late Steve Irwin’s wildlife sanctuary, where you can get up close to crocs, koalas, and kangaroos, makes a fun stop en route from Brisbane.
