Forsayth is a tiny outback settlement in Far North Queensland, best known as the terminus of the legendary Savannahlander train from Cairns. It's a true frontier town, where the red dirt meets the Gulf savannah, and the pace of life slows to a crawl. Forsayth offers a genuine taste of outback hospitality, with a historic pub, a handful of hardy locals, and access to some of Queensland's most remote and rugged landscapes.
Highlights & What to See
- Ride the Savannahlander: This iconic 4WD train is the main reason to visit. The journey from Cairns winds through rainforest, savannah, and goldfields, ending at Forsayth station. It's a full-day adventure that feels like stepping back in time.
- Forsayth Hotel (the pub): The heart of the town, where you can grab a cold beer, hear outback yarns, and enjoy a hearty meal. The pub also offers basic accommodation and a campground.
- Historic gold-mining relics: Forsayth was a gold-rush town in the late 1800s. Scattered around are old mine shafts, rusting machinery, and the cemetery — a poignant reminder of the harsh life.
- Einasleigh River: A short drive away, this river is a great spot for birdwatching, fishing (for barramundi in season), or just soaking up the quiet bush.
- Cobbold Gorge: About 30 km west, this stunning sandstone gorge offers guided tours, swimming, and Aboriginal cultural insights. It's a must-do for nature lovers.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors come on the Savannahlander and stay one or two nights. If you're driving, allow at least a full day to explore the area and soak up the atmosphere. The train journey itself takes a full day from Cairns, so plan for a minimum of two nights if you want to experience Forsayth properly.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
