Elsey National Park

Elsey National Park, a lush pocket of tropical savannah and thermal springs, offers a serene escape into the Northern Territory's ancient landscape. While not in Cairns itself (it's actually near Katherine, NT), it's often included in extended Queensland itineraries for its unique geological wonders and Indigenous heritage. The park's centerpiece is the crystal-clear Bitter Springs, where you can float in warm, mineral-rich waters surrounded by paperbark trees.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend a half-day to a full day exploring the park's springs and short walks. For a relaxed experience, arrive early morning to beat the heat and crowds. If you're keen on swimming in both Bitter and Rainbow Springs, plus a leisurely walk, allocate 3–4 hours. Pair it with an overnight stay at Mataranka to fully absorb the outback atmosphere.
