Perched on the Atherton Tablelands at 750 metres above sea level, Atherton is the bustling hub of a region that feels a world away from coastal Cairns. This is Queensland's lush, volcanic hinterland—a patchwork of dairy farms, fruit orchards, and remnant rainforest where the air is crisp and the pace is slow. The town itself has a workaday country charm, but its real draw is the surrounding landscape: crater lakes, tumbling waterfalls, and a network of walking trails that reveal the ancient Gondwanan heritage of this fertile plateau.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Give Atherton and the Tablelands at least two full days. One day is enough for a whistle-stop tour of the crater lakes and waterfalls, but you’ll want a second to explore the region’s walking trails, visit a local dairy or coffee plantation, and linger over a meal at one of the town’s excellent cafés. If you’re self-driving from Cairns, the 90-minute journey via the Gillies Range is an adventure in itself—allow for photo stops at the lookout points.
