Perched on the Atherton Tablelands at 750 metres above sea level, Atherton is the bustling hub of a region that feels a world away from coastal Cairns. This is Queensland's lush, volcanic hinterland—a patchwork of dairy farms, fruit orchards, and remnant rainforest where the air is crisp and the pace is slow. The town itself has a workaday country charm, but its real draw is the surrounding landscape: crater lakes, tumbling waterfalls, and a network of walking trails that reveal the ancient Gondwanan heritage of this fertile plateau.
Highlights & What to See
- Lake Eacham & Lake Barrine – Two pristine volcanic crater lakes ringed by dense rainforest. Swim in the clear, cool waters, paddle a kayak, or walk the circuit tracks (2.9 km at Eacham, 6 km at Barrine) for a chance to spot musky rat-kangaroos and azure kingfishers.
- Curtain Fig Tree – A phenomenal strangler fig with aerial roots that drape like a curtain. The short, wheelchair-accessible boardwalk lets you marvel at this 500-year-old giant just 15 minutes from town.
- Millaa Millaa Falls & the Waterfall Circuit – Part of a stunning 12 km loop that takes in three iconic cascades: Millaa Millaa, Zillie, and Ellinjaa. Millaa Millaa is the classic postcard plunge pool—perfect for a dip on a warm day.
- Platypus Park – Head to the Petersen Creek boardwalk at dawn or dusk for your best shot at spotting platypuses in the wild. The park also has a great playground and picnic spots.
- Halloran’s Hill Conservation Park – A short, steep walk rewards you with panoramic views stretching from the Coral Sea to the Tablelands’ volcanic cones.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give Atherton and the Tablelands at least two full days. One day is enough for a whistle-stop tour of the crater lakes and waterfalls, but you’ll want a second to explore the region’s walking trails, visit a local dairy or coffee plantation, and linger over a meal at one of the town’s excellent cafés. If you’re self-driving from Cairns, the 90-minute journey via the Gillies Range is an adventure in itself—allow for photo stops at the lookout points.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Kuranda – The village in the rainforest, famous for its markets, the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, and the scenic Kuranda Scenic Railway. It’s an easy detour on the drive between Cairns and Atherton.
- Cairns Esplanade – After the cool heights of the Tablelands, unwind on the Cairns Esplanade with its saltwater lagoon, bustling night markets, and waterfront restaurants. The contrast between mountain and coast is part of the magic.
