Streets Beach
Streets Beach is Australia’s only inner-city man-made beach, nestled in the heart of Brisbane’s South Bank precinct. This sparkling lagoon of turquoise water, fringed by white sand and lush palms, offers a surreal escape from the urban buzz. It’s a beloved spot for both locals and visitors to cool off, picnic, and soak up the subtropical sun without leaving the city.
Highlights & What to See
- Swim in the lagoon – The crystal-clear, chlorinated lagoon is patrolled by lifeguards and perfect for a refreshing dip. The sandy beach slopes gently, making it safe for children.
- South Bank Parklands – The beach is part of this sprawling riverside oasis, with rainforest walks, BBQ areas, and the iconic Wheel of Brisbane. Stroll the Arbour, a kilometre-long boulevard draped in magenta bougainvillea.
- Cultural institutions – Nearby, the Queensland Museum, Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA), and Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) offer world-class exhibitions and performances.
- Picnic and people-watch – Grab a bite from the surrounding cafés or pack a picnic. The grassy knolls and shaded spots provide prime views of the Brisbane River and Story Bridge.
- Sunset views – As the sun dips behind the city skyline, the beach takes on a golden glow. It’s a favourite spot for photographers and romantics.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 2–3 hours here, combining a swim with a leisurely wander through South Bank. If you’re planning to also visit museums or have a meal, set aside a half-day. The beach is open daily from 7am to 7pm (until 8pm in summer), so arrive early to secure a good spot on weekends.
