Ruby Gap, in the West MacDonnell Ranges, is a remote and rugged gorge famed for its garnet deposits and startling red cliffs. This off-the-beaten-track destination rewards adventurous travellers with stunning geology, solitude, and a sense of discovery. The gap is named after the ruby-red garnets that can be found in the creek bed — a true treasure hunt for rockhounds.
Highlights & What to See
- Garnet fossicking: Search for small, dark-red garnets in the sandy creek bed — a unique hands-on experience in the Australian outback.
- Ruby Gap Nature Park: Explore the dramatic gorge with its towering quartzite cliffs, coloured in deep ochres and reds.
- Scenic 4WD drive: The approach along the Ross Highway and then unsealed roads is an adventure in itself, passing through spinifex country and dry riverbeds.
- Walking and photography: Short walks along the creek reveal ever-changing light on the cliffs, especially at sunrise and sunset.
- Wildlife spotting: Keep an eye out for red kangaroos, dingoes, and a variety of birdlife, including wedge-tailed eagles.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors allocate a half-day to reach Ruby Gap from Alice Springs (about 2 hours each way) plus 1–2 hours to explore the gorge and fossick. If you're keen on photography or longer walks, plan for a full day. The road is 4WD only and can be slow, so factor in plenty of time. Overnight camping is possible at the basic campground within the nature park.
