Nestled at the base of the rugged West MacDonnell Ranges, Olive Pink Botanic Garden is a serene oasis dedicated to the flora of Australia’s arid heart. Named after the pioneering anthropologist and activist Olive Pink, this 16-hectare garden showcases over 600 species of desert plants, from ghost gums to spinifex, all set against a backdrop of red rock escarpments. It’s a place where you can wander winding paths, learn about Indigenous plant use, and spot rock wallabies at dusk.
Highlights & What to See
- Desert Plant Walk: A self-guided trail through eight themed sections, including the Desert Oak, Wattle, and Eucalypt displays, with interpretive signs explaining traditional uses by the Arrernte people.
- Lookout Point: A short climb rewards you with panoramic views over Alice Springs and the surrounding ranges – especially stunning at sunrise or sunset.
- Olive Pink’s Hut: A replica of the original homestead where Olive lived, offering insight into her life and work.
- Wildflower Season: Visit after rain (typically winter–spring) to see the desert burst into colour with everlastings, Sturt’s desert peas, and grevilleas.
- Birdwatching: Keep an eye out for honeyeaters, finches, and the elusive painted finch among the mulga and acacia.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours exploring the garden’s loops and lookout. If you’re a keen botanist or photographer, allow half a day to fully appreciate the diversity and to walk the longer Desert Oak trail. The garden is easily combined with a morning or afternoon visit to Alice Springs Desert Park or the Alice Springs Reptile Centre.
