Glen Helen

Glen Helen is a rugged outback homestead and gorge set deep in the West MacDonnell Ranges, about 130 km west of Alice Springs. The dramatic red cliffs of the gorge contrast with the permanent waterhole below, making it a classic Red Centre stop for swimming, hiking, and soaking in the ancient landscape. The historic Glen Helen Homestead, now a pub and lodge, adds a touch of pioneer spirit, serving cold beer and hearty meals with a view of the ranges.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors stop for 1–2 hours to swim, take photos, and have a meal at the pub. If you’re hiking part of the Larapinta Trail or doing a scenic flight, plan for a half-day. Glen Helen also has accommodation (rooms and camping) if you want to stay overnight and enjoy the sunset and sunrise in peace. It works well as a lunch stop on the way to or from Kings Canyon or Uluru.
