Ruby Gap, deep in the West MacDonnell Ranges, is a remote, ruggedly beautiful gorge named after the red garnets (fool's rubies) prospectors once sought here. This off-the-beaten-track destination rewards adventurous travellers with stunning red rock formations, ghost gums, and a genuine outback solitude that feels a world away from Alice Springs.
Highlights & What to See
- Ruby Gap Gorge Walk – A moderate 6 km (return) hike along a sandy creek bed, flanked by towering quartzite cliffs. The trail follows the Hale River, with opportunities to spot red kangaroos and birdlife.
- Garnet fossicking – The gap is famous for its small red garnets (often called 'rubies'). While you can try your luck panning in the creek, remember it's a conservation area – take only photos.
- Stargazing – Far from any light pollution, the night sky here is phenomenal. Camp overnight to experience the Milky Way in all its glory.
- Scenic 4WD drive – The approach along the unsealed Ruby Gap Road is an adventure in itself, winding through spinifex plains and dry riverbeds with dramatic range views.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give yourself a full day from Alice Springs, or better yet, combine a half-day hike with an overnight camp to truly soak in the serenity. The walk itself takes 2–3 hours, but factor in extra time for fossicking, photography, and simply absorbing the silence. A high-clearance 4WD is essential, and the road can be impassable after rain, so check conditions beforehand.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Finke River – One of the world's oldest rivers, offering scenic drives and ancient landscapes.
- Alice Springs – The gateway town, with its cultural sites, markets, and the famous Royal Flying Doctor Service.
