Oriston Pound Walk
Carved into the ancient spine of the West MacDonnell Ranges, the Oriston Pound Walk is a dramatic circuit that reveals the raw, rugged beauty of Central Australia. This 7.5 km loop leads you through a natural amphitheatre of rust-red cliffs, spinifex-covered slopes, and ghost gums clinging to dry creek beds. It's a quieter alternative to the region's more famous gorges, offering a genuine outback walking experience with sweeping views and a palpable sense of geological time.
Highlights & What to See
- The Pound itself – a vast, bowl-shaped valley ringed by sheer quartzite walls; the contrast of red rock and blue sky is mesmerising.
- Panoramic ridge-top views – early in the walk, a short but steep climb rewards you with a 360° vista over the Pound and the surrounding West MacDonnell Ranges.
- Ghost gums and desert oaks – striking white-barked eucalypts and ancient trees that frame the trail, especially photogenic in the late afternoon.
- Wildflowers and birdlife – after rain, the floor of the Pound erupts in colour; keep an eye out for zebra finches, honeyeaters and wedge-tailed eagles overhead.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 3–4 hours for the full loop, including time to stop for photos and to soak in the silence. Start early in the morning (before 9 am) between April and September to avoid the midday heat; in summer, the walk is best tackled at dawn. The trail is moderately challenging – sturdy shoes, plenty of water (at least 3 litres per person), and sun protection are essential.
