Stretching west from Alice Springs, West Macdonnell National Park is a dramatic spine of ancient quartzite ridges, ochre gorges, and ghost-gum-lined waterholes. This is the Red Centre at its most accessible yet raw — a place where you can swim in a permanent waterhole beneath towering cliffs, search for 1,000-million-year-old fossils, and watch the sunset paint the range in fiery hues. For self-drivers, the sealed Larapinta Drive makes it an easy day trip or a multi-day adventure with campgrounds and walks that rival anything in the country.
Highlights & What to See
- Simpsons Gap – A dramatic cleft in the range with a permanent waterhole; spot black-footed rock-wallabies at dawn or dusk.
- Standley Chasm – A narrow, sheer-walled chasm that glows fiery red when the sun is overhead (best around midday); a short, easy walk leads in.
- Ochre Pits – Natural deposits of ochre in shades of white, yellow, red, and purple, still used by local Arrernte people for ceremonial painting.
- Ellery Creek Big Hole – A deep, cool waterhole surrounded by red cliffs, perfect for a refreshing swim after a walk.
- Serpentine Gorge – A sinuous gorge with a lookout offering sweeping views over the range; the waterhole is often home to rare fish.
- Glen Helen Gorge – At the western end, a permanent waterhole with towering cliffs; the adjacent Glen Helen Resort offers meals and accommodation.
- Larapinta Trail – One of Australia’s great long-distance walks; even a short section (e.g., from Simpsons Gap to Standley Chasm) gives a taste of its grandeur.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors allow a full day to drive the 130 km sealed road from Alice Springs to Glen Helen Gorge and back, stopping at key gorges and waterholes. However, to truly soak it in — and perhaps do a short walk or two — plan for two days. If you’re a keen hiker, the Larapinta Trail demands a week or more; otherwise, a day trip covers the highlights without feeling rushed. Overnight at Glen Helen Resort or one of the campgrounds to catch the golden light of sunset and sunrise.
