Hidden in the heart of Australia's Red Centre, Palm Valley is a lush, ancient oasis that feels like a mirage. Part of Finke Gorge National Park, this surreal landscape is home to the rare red cabbage palm (Livistona mariae), a living fossil dating back to the Cretaceous period. The drive in is an adventure in itself, winding through rugged gorges and ochre cliffs, but the reward is a verdant valley where towering palms line a permanent waterhole—a stark, breathtaking contrast to the surrounding desert.
Highlights & What to See
- Red Cabbage Palms: Marvel at the world's most southerly natural palm grove, with over 1,000 of these prehistoric trees thriving in the valley's microclimate.
- Palm Valley Walk: Follow the 5 km return trail along the sandy creek bed, weaving between palms and past rock holes; allow 2–3 hours for a leisurely stroll with plenty of photo stops.
- Finke River Gorge: Explore the ancient riverbed of the Finke, one of the world's oldest river systems, with its towering red sandstone walls and ghost gums.
- Kalarranga Lookout: Drive to this viewpoint for a panoramic vista of the valley and the surrounding desert, especially stunning at golden hour.
- Four-Wheel-Drive Adventure: The 22 km unsealed road from Hermannsburg to Palm Valley is a highlight in itself, requiring a 4WD—allow 1 hour each way for the bumpy, scenic journey.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan at least half a day for Palm Valley, including the drive from Alice Springs or Uluru. Most visitors spend 2–3 hours on the main walk and exploring the gorge, plus time for the scenic drive and lookout. To fully absorb the tranquility, consider camping overnight at the nearby Finke Gorge campground (bookable in advance). If you're combining with Uluru, set aside a full day for the round trip from Yulara (about 4 hours drive each way).
