Set on the edge of the red desert, Curtin Springs is a working cattle station that offers a genuine outback experience. It's a classic pit stop on the way to Uluru, with a dusty, friendly atmosphere where you can refuel, grab a cold drink, and soak up the vast silence of the surrounding plains. The real draw, though, is the chance to see the remarkable salt lakes, particularly Lake Amadeus, which shimmers with a pinkish-white crust under the fierce sun.
Highlights & What to See
- Salt Lakes & Desert Views – Walk or drive to the edge of Lake Amadeus, one of the largest salt lakes in the Northern Territory. At sunset, the colours shift from white to pink to deep orange, with Uluru and Kata Tjuta visible on the horizon.
- Station Life – Visit the historic homestead and learn about life on a remote cattle station. The family-run operation welcomes travellers, and you can even stay overnight in basic cabins or the campground.
- Sunset Viewing – The station's sunset viewing area offers a quieter alternative to the crowded sunset spots at Uluru. Bring a drink and watch the sky explode over the desert.
- Birdwatching – The waterholes around the station attract a surprising variety of birds, including zebra finches, galahs and budgerigars.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers spend just a couple of hours here as a break between Alice Springs and Uluru, but if you're after a slower pace, consider an overnight stay. Arrive in the late afternoon, enjoy the sunset, and then head off early the next morning to reach Uluru for sunrise. If you're camping, you'll appreciate the dark skies for stargazing.
