Stanley Chasm is a striking sandstone gorge on the Larapinta Trail in the West MacDonnell Ranges, about 50km west of Alice Springs. As you walk through the narrow cleft, the walls rise sheer on either side, filtering the sunlight into a cool, shaded corridor. It's a quintessential Red Centre experience — dramatic geology, endemic flora, and a palpable sense of ancient landscape.
Highlights & What to See
- The Chasm Walk: A short, easy 1.2km return walk that leads into the gorge. The best time is midday when the sun is directly overhead, illuminating the walls in a warm glow.
- Cycad Gorge: A side track off the main walk leads to a grove of rare MacDonnell Ranges cycads, living fossils that have survived for millions of years.
- Birdwatching: Keep an eye out for zebra finches, spinifex pigeons, and the striking red-tailed black cockatoo that frequent the area.
- Interpretive Signs: Along the walk, signs explain the geology and traditional Arrernte Aboriginal significance of the site.
- Picnic Area: There's a shaded picnic spot near the car park, perfect for a lunch break after the walk.
Suggested Time to Spend
Set aside 1–2 hours for the walk and to soak up the atmosphere. It's an ideal stop on a day trip from Alice Springs, or as a short detour when driving the Larapinta Drive. Combine with Simpsons Gap or Standley Chasm for a full day exploring the West MacDonnell Ranges.
