Rumbling through the red heart of the Northern Territory, the Victoria River is a lifeblood of the outback, carving a dramatic, lush corridor through arid savannah. This is classic NT country – vast, raw, and teeming with wildlife. For travellers on the journey between Katherine and Western Australia, it's a memorable stop for a swim, a cruise, or simply to absorb the scale of the landscape from the Victoria River Roadhouse.
Highlights & What to See
- Victoria River Cruise: Glide along the river on a guided boat tour to see saltwater crocs, freshwater crocodiles, and a spectacular array of birdlife, including brolgas and jabirus, all while learning about the region's pastoral history.
- Victoria River Roadhouse & Crossing: A classic outback pit stop with fuel, cold drinks, and a view of the river from the verandah. It's the perfect place to watch the sunset paint the escarpments orange.
- Jasper Gorge: A short drive west, this steep-sided gorge offers a scenic lookout and a chance to see ancient rock art and wildflowers after rain.
- Bulla Bulla Billabong: A serene waterhole just off the highway, ideal for a refreshing dip (check for croc signs) and birdwatching in the paperbark-fringed wetlands.
- Gregory National Park: The park's eastern section, reachable from the Victoria River area, features striking escarpments, limestone gorges, and Aboriginal rock art sites like those at Limmen Gate.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers pause for 1–2 hours to stretch legs, grab a meal at the roadhouse, and take in the river view. For a deeper experience, book a sunset cruise (2–3 hours) and consider an overnight stay at the roadhouse or a nearby camp to explore Gregory National Park the next morning. A half-day is enough for a cruise and a short walk, while a full day allows for a longer drive into the national park.
