Port Augusta, perched at the head of Spencer Gulf, is the crossroads of the Australian outback. Known as the 'Gateway to the Flinders Ranges' and the starting point for the legendary Oodnadatta Track, this sunbaked town offers a compelling blend of rail history, arid-zone nature, and stark red landscapes. It's a practical and atmospheric stop for anyone self-driving north from Adelaide or heading into the Red Centre.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most travellers overnight here as a convenient stopover, and that's exactly right: one full day is enough to visit the botanic garden, the outback centre, and stroll the waterfront. If you're a rail enthusiast or keen to ride the Pichi Richi train, allow an extra half-day. Two nights is comfortable if you want to also explore nearby Quorn or take a scenic flight over the gulf.
