Parachilna is a tiny, saltbush-flat settlement on the edge of the Flinders Ranges in South Australia, not the Northern Territory. It’s the kind of place where the pub is the town, and the silence is broken only by the wind and the distant chug of the historic Ghan train. This is pure outback character: red dirt, blue skies, and a sense of isolation that feels both humbling and exhilarating.
Highlights & What to See
- The Prairie Hotel – an iconic outback pub serving gourmet bush tucker like camel, kangaroo, and emu. Its verandah is the perfect spot for a sunset beer as the sun bleeds over the plains.
- Parachilna Gorge – a dramatic, red-rock gorge that cuts through the Flinders Ranges. A short walk reveals ancient river red gums and the chance to spot yellow-footed rock-wallabies.
- Historic Ghan Train viewing – the legendary train passes through on its way between Adelaide and Darwin. Time your visit to wave at passengers or watch from the pub’s front yard.
- Bunyeroo and Brachina Gorges – a scenic drive through geologically significant gorges with stunning lookouts and fossil sites (part of the Flinders Ranges World Heritage nomination).
- Angorichina Village – a former mining settlement with a quirky hostel and a natural spring-fed swimming pool, just 10 km north.
Suggested Time to Spend
Parachilna is a stopover, not a destination. One night is enough to soak up the pub atmosphere, watch the sunset, and walk the gorge. If you want to explore the wider Flinders Ranges (Wilpena Pound, Arkaroola), allow 2–3 days base-camping here. The pub is a great launch pad for self-drive loops through the ranges.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Blair Athol – a restored 19th-century pub and homestead, offering another dose of outback hospitality and history.
- Lyndhurst – the gateway to the Strzelecki Track, with a classic outback pub and a striking painted desert landscape.
- Leigh Creek – a purpose-built coal-mining town with a supermarket, fuel, and accommodation – useful for supplies.
- Copley – a small railway town with a historic pub and the start of the Heysen Trail walking track.
