Deep in South Australia’s limestone country, the Naracoorte Caves are a UNESCO World Heritage site that reads like a fossil-filled time capsule. This network of caverns preserves one of the world’s richest deposits of Pleistocene megafauna, making it a must-visit for anyone fascinated by prehistoric life. Beyond the science, the caves themselves are spectacular – think eerie stalactite forests, vast echoing chambers, and guided tours that take you into the literal underworld. It’s a cool, damp escape from the outback heat and a highlight of any drive through the Red Centre region.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend a half-day (3–4 hours) exploring two or three caves plus the fossil centre. If you’re keen on a deeper dive, book the 'Adventure Caving' tour (2 hours) for a hands-on crawl through undeveloped passages. Overnight stays are possible at the adjacent campground, letting you tackle the longer 'Lantern Tour' after dark.
