Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk National Park) is a stunning series of 13 sandstone gorges carved by the Katherine River, about 30km from Katherine town. This is a place of immense natural beauty and deep Indigenous significance, jointly managed by the local Jawoyn people. The towering cliffs, permanent waterholes, and abundant wildlife make it a must-visit for anyone exploring the Top End.
Highlights & What to See
- Gorge Cruises: The best way to experience the scale and serenity of the gorges. Choose from a two-hour cruise through the first two gorges (with a short walk between them) or a longer trip that reaches the third gorge in the dry season.
- Kayaking & Canoeing: Rent a kayak or canoe to explore at your own pace. You can paddle through the first gorge and portage to the second; experienced paddlers can go further. Keep an eye out for freshwater crocodiles basking on the rocks.
- Walking Trails: The park offers walks for all abilities, from the easy 2.6km Baruwei Lookout loop to the challenging 12km Jatbula Trail (a multi-day trek ending at Edith Falls). Don't miss the Windolf Lookout for panoramic gorge views.
- Swimming: During the dry season (May–September), swimming is safe at designated spots like the first gorge and Leliyn (Edith Falls). Always check park alerts for stingers and crocodile warnings.
- Cultural Tours: Join a Jawoyn-guided tour to learn about Dreamtime stories, bush tucker, and traditional uses of plants. The Nitmiluk Visitor Centre also has excellent cultural displays.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day at the gorges: a morning cruise or kayaking session, a short walk to a lookout, and a picnic lunch by the river. If you're short on time, a half-day cruise covers the highlights. For a deeper experience, consider an overnight canoe trip or hiking the Jatbula Trail (5 days/4 nights). The park is accessible year-round, but the dry season (April–October) offers the best weather and water conditions.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
