Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk National Park) is a stunning series of 13 sandstone gorges carved by the Katherine River, about 30km from Katherine town. This is a place of immense natural beauty and deep Indigenous significance, jointly managed by the local Jawoyn people. The towering cliffs, permanent waterholes, and abundant wildlife make it a must-visit for anyone exploring the Top End.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend a full day at the gorges: a morning cruise or kayaking session, a short walk to a lookout, and a picnic lunch by the river. If you're short on time, a half-day cruise covers the highlights. For a deeper experience, consider an overnight canoe trip or hiking the Jatbula Trail (5 days/4 nights). The park is accessible year-round, but the dry season (April–October) offers the best weather and water conditions.
