Jabiru

Jabiru is the unlikely heart of Kakadu National Park, a purpose-built mining town that now serves as the essential base for exploring the park's ancient escarpments, wetlands, and rock art. Named after the black-necked stork, this small settlement punches above its weight with a surprising array of accommodation, a supermarket, and a golf course that doubles as a buffalo and wallaby viewing platform. For international travellers, Jabiru offers the rare chance to sleep inside a dual World Heritage-listed landscape, where 65,000 years of Aboriginal culture meets some of Australia's most dramatic wilderness.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Two nights in Jabiru gives you a full day and a half to explore the park's northern highlights. Arrive early on day one to visit Ubirr at sunset, then spend the next day at Nourlangie and Yellow Water. If you have a third night, you can venture further south to Jim Jim Falls or Gunlom plunge pool (dry season only). Jabiru itself can be seen in an hour, but the real draw is its location as a springboard into Kakadu.
