Set deep in the heart of Kakadu National Park, Cooinda is a tiny outpost that punches well above its weight for wildlife and Indigenous culture. This is the jumping-off point for the legendary Yellow Water Billabong cruise, where you'll drift past crocs, jabirus and buffalo against a backdrop of floodplains and escarpments. Cooinda itself is little more than a lodge, campground and airstrip, but its setting is pure Top End magic – all red earth, paperbark wetlands and a soundtrack of cicadas and bird calls.
Highlights & What to See
- Yellow Water Billabong cruise – the must-do wildlife experience in Kakadu, especially at sunrise or sunset when crocodiles are most active and the light turns the water gold.
- Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre – an excellent, community-run museum shaped like a turtle, with interactive displays on Bininj/Mungguy culture, dreaming stories and bush tucker.
- Mamukala Wetlands walk – a short boardwalk and bird hide that's superb for waterfowl, especially during the dry season (May–October) when thousands of magpie geese congregate.
- Bowali Visitor Centre (nearby Jabiru) – worth a detour for its excellent exhibits on Kakadu's geology, flora and fauna, plus a cool air-conditioned break.
- Jim Jim Falls & Twin Falls – accessible via 4WD from Cooinda (dry season only), these towering plunges are among Kakadu's most spectacular sights, with plunge pools for swimming.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers base themselves in Cooinda for two nights, which gives you a full day for the Yellow Water cruise (book the sunrise trip), a visit to the cultural centre, and a half-day 4WD excursion to Jim Jim or Twin Falls. If you're short on time, a single overnight is enough for the cruise and a wetland walk – but you'll wish you'd stayed longer. Kakadu is vast; don't try to do it all in one day.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Jabiru – Kakadu's main service town (20 km north), with a supermarket, fuel and the Bowali Visitor Centre.
- Nourlangie Rock – a spectacular sandstone outlier with ancient Aboriginal rock art galleries, about 40 km from Cooinda via sealed road.
- Ubirr – famous for its sunset views over the Nadab floodplain and some of the park's finest rock paintings (allow a full day from Cooinda).
- Pine Creek – a historic gold-rush town about 100 km south, worth a stop for its pubs and railway station on the drive to Katherine.
- Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge – a 1.5-hour drive south, this stunning system of sandstone gorges is perfect for canoeing, boat cruises and hikes.
