Hattah Kulkyne National Park
In the heart of Victoria’s Mallee region, Hattah-Kulkyne National Park is a starkly beautiful landscape of red sand dunes, ancient river red gums, and a chain of freshwater lakes. This is a place where the outback meets the Murray River floodplain, creating a haven for birdlife and a serene escape for those who appreciate raw, quiet nature. It’s less known than the nearby Grampians, making it perfect for travellers seeking solitude and a genuine outback experience.
Highlights & What to See
- Hattah Lakes – A series of ephemeral lakes that fill after floods, attracting thousands of waterbirds. Take the Lake Hattah Nature Walk for sweeping views.
- River Red Gum Forests – Towering, centuries-old red gums lining the Murray River; the Kings Billabong area offers easy access and shady picnic spots.
- Mallee Emu-Wren Habitat – The park is one of the best places to spot this endangered bird in the low, spinifex-covered dunes.
- Nowingi Track – A 4WD-only route through the heart of the park, winding through mallee scrub and past ancient sand dunes.
- Murray River & Canoeing – Paddle along the Murray’s calm backwaters; you can launch at the Hattah-Kulkyne campground.
- Aboriginal Heritage – The park is significant to the Latji Latji and Wergaia peoples; look for scar trees and middens along the river.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give yourself at least a full day to explore the park’s core – the lakes, a short walk, and a picnic. If you have a 4WD and want to tackle the Nowingi Track or canoe the Murray, two days is ideal. Combine with a night at the Hattah-Kulkyne campground (basic, but wonderfully quiet) to experience the sunset over the lakes and the dawn chorus of birds.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
