Great Keppel Island is a tropical paradise in the Southern Great Barrier Reef, known for its pristine white-sand beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and vibrant coral reefs. Just a 30-minute ferry ride from Yeppoon on the Capricorn Coast, this island offers a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure, with excellent snorkeling, hiking, and a laid-back island vibe.
Highlights & What to See
- Monkey Beach – A stunning stretch of white sand fringed by pandanus palms, ideal for swimming and sunbathing. The gentle waves make it perfect for families.
- Shell Beach – A quieter spot with shallow, calm waters, great for wading and spotting marine life. The beach is littered with beautiful shells.
- Snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef – The island is surrounded by fringing reefs teeming with colorful fish, turtles, and coral. Head to the reef off Monkey Beach or take a guided tour to outer reefs.
- Wooden Hill Lookout – A short but steep hike rewards you with panoramic views of the island and the mainland. Best at sunrise or late afternoon for golden light.
- Long Beach – A longer, more secluded beach on the north side, accessible via a walking track. Perfect for a peaceful stroll or picnic.
- Great Keppel Island Hideaway – The island's only accommodation and restaurant, offering casual dining with ocean views. Try the fresh seafood platter.
Suggested Time to Spend
A day trip is possible, but to truly appreciate the island, stay 2–3 nights. Spend your first day snorkeling and exploring the beaches, the second day hiking to the lookout and kayaking around the coves, and a third day relaxing or taking a boat tour to nearby reefs. If you're tight on time, a full day from early morning to late afternoon allows for a couple of snorkel spots and a hike.
