Just 45 minutes south of Darwin, Berry Springs is a lush pocket of the Top End where crystal-clear spring water cascades over rocky ledges into a series of swimming holes shaded by paperbarks and pandanus. This is the quintessential Territory swimming spot — cool, calm and utterly refreshing. The springs are part of a larger reserve that also includes picnic areas, walking trails and a wildlife park, making it a perfect half-day escape from the city.
Highlights & What to See
- Main Swimming Hole: The largest pool, with a small waterfall and plenty of space to float. The water is a constant 28°C, so it's always inviting.
- Upper Pools: Quieter and more secluded, reached by a short walk upstream. Ideal for a peaceful dip surrounded by monsoon forest.
- Berry Springs Nature Park: Beyond the springs, walking trails wind through monsoon vine forest and woodlands. Look for rainbow bee-eaters and red-tailed black cockatoos.
- Territory Wildlife Park: Adjacent to the springs, this excellent park features walk-through aviaries, a nocturnal house, and daily animal talks. Don't miss the aquarium tunnel with huge barramundi and sawfish.
- Picnic & BBQ Facilities: Plenty of shaded tables and free electric barbecues — pack a lunch and make a day of it.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 2–3 hours swimming and relaxing at the springs. If you also plan to visit the Territory Wildlife Park, allocate at least 4–5 hours in total. Arrive early (before 10am) on weekends and public holidays to secure a good spot, as the park is popular with locals. The springs are open year-round, but the best time to visit is the dry season (May–October) when the water is clearest and there are no crocodile concerns.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
