Stretching across the heart of the Northern Territory, the Barkly Tableland is an epic, ancient landscape of vast black-soil plains, red dirt, and endless horizons. This is big-sky country where cattle stations cover millions of acres, and the legendary Barkly Highway cuts through the outback. For travellers seeking a genuine outback experience, it’s a place of raw beauty, rich Aboriginal history, and surprising wildlife – from wedge-tailed eagles to wild donkeys. The region’s isolation is its drawcard: you’ll find few crowds, but plenty of space to ponder the sheer scale of Australia.
Highlights & What to See
- Devil’s Marbles (Karlu Karlu) – A sacred site of giant, rounded granite boulders scattered across a valley, especially magical at sunrise or sunset when the colours deepen to ochre and gold.
- Tennant Creek – The region’s main hub, with a fascinating gold-mining history, the Battery Hill Mining Centre, and the Nyinkka Nyunyu Art and Culture Centre showcasing local Warumungu stories.
- Barkly Stock Route – A historic droving route that still sees cattle drives; you can drive sections to experience the vast, unfenced plains and spot kangaroos, emus, and birds of prey.
- Lake Woods – A vast ephemeral wetland near Elliott, a magnet for birdlife (including brolgas and pelicans) after rain, and a peaceful spot for camping under the stars.
- Attack Creek Historical Reserve – A small but poignant site marking the northernmost point explorer John McDouall Stuart reached in 1860, with interpretive signs and a short walk.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give yourself at least two to three days to truly soak in the Barkly Tableland’s scale and solitude. A day to explore Tennant Creek and the Devil’s Marbles, plus a second day to drive a section of the Barkly Stock Route or visit Lake Woods. If you’re self-driving from Alice Springs to Darwin (or vice versa), the Tableland makes a perfect one-night stop – but you’ll wish you’d stayed longer. Remember to fill up with fuel at Tennant Creek, as services are sparse.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Alice Springs – The Red Centre’s gateway, with the West MacDonnell Ranges and Larapinta Trail a day’s drive south.
- Katherine & Nitmiluk National Park – About 400 km north, with spectacular gorges and hot springs along the Stuart Highway.
- Daly Waters Pub – A legendary outback pub and quirky stopover, roughly 300 km north of Tennant Creek.
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park – Further southwest, the iconic red monolith and domes are a major detour but unforgettable if time allows.
