Mercenie Loop
The Mercenie Loop is a spectacular 4WD track that winds through the West MacDonnell Ranges west of Alice Springs. This remote route offers a true outback adventure, passing through rugged gorges, ochre-red cliffs, and ancient ghost gum woodlands. It’s a journey into the heart of Arrernte country, where the landscape tells stories of Dreamtime and pioneering history.
Highlights & What to See
- Hermannsburg Historic Precinct – Explore the Lutheran mission settlement founded in 1877, with original stone buildings and a fascinating museum on Aboriginal mission life.
- Palm Valley (Finke Gorge National Park) – A lush oasis of red cabbage palms, unique to this region. The 4WD track into the valley is an adventure in itself, with creek crossings and towering cliffs.
- Ochre Pits – Vibrant, layered ochre deposits used by Aboriginal people for millennia for ceremony and art. The colours range from white to deep red.
- Glen Helen Gorge – A permanent waterhole at the base of sheer red cliffs, perfect for a swim or picnic. The gorge is a key site for birdwatching.
- Standley Chasm – A narrow, dramatic chasm where light beams down at midday. A short walk leads to the cleft, revealing brilliant orange walls.
- Ellery Creek Big Hole – A deep, cool swimming hole surrounded by red dolomite cliffs. It’s one of the best spots to cool off after a dusty drive.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow a full day for the loop itself, but ideally plan 2–3 days to truly soak in the highlights. Many travellers combine the Mercenie Loop with a night at Glen Helen Resort or camping in Finke Gorge National Park. The track is rough and requires a high-clearance 4WD; check road conditions before setting out. Start early to avoid the heat and allow time for walks and swims.
