Imagine soaking in a crystal-clear, 34°C thermal pool surrounded by paperbark trees and tropical palms, with the distant sound of birdlife echoing through the outback. That's the magic of Mataranka Thermal Pool, a natural spring-fed oasis in the Northern Territory's Red Centre. Fed by the underground Roper River, these warm, mineral-rich waters are a beloved swimming spot for travellers seeking respite from the heat. The water is so clear you can see the sandy bottom, and the constant temperature makes it perfect for a dip any time of year. It's a place where you can float, relax, and feel the stresses of the road melt away.
Highlights & What to See
- Swim in the Main Pool – The main thermal pool is the star: a large, spring-fed swimming hole with a sandy bottom and palm-fringed edges. The water is warm, clear, and incredibly inviting.
- Bitter Springs – Just a short walk or drive away, Bitter Springs offers a more intimate swimming experience. Its name belies the water, which is actually sweet and clear, with a gentle current that carries you along.
- Rainbow Spring – A smaller, quieter pool surrounded by pandanus palms. It's less crowded and feels like a secret spot.
- Elsey National Park – The thermal pools are part of this park, which also has walking trails, birdwatching, and historic sites linked to the novel We of the Never Never.
- Mataranka Homestead – A historic outback homestead that offers accommodation, a bar, and a restaurant. It's a great base for exploring the area.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for at least half a day to fully appreciate Mataranka Thermal Pool. Arrive early (before 10am) or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat and crowds. Two to three hours is plenty for a leisurely swim, a walk to Bitter Springs, and a meal at the Homestead. If you're on a self-drive itinerary, it's a perfect lunch stop between Katherine and Tennant Creek. For a more relaxed pace, consider staying overnight at the Homestead or nearby campground to enjoy a sunset swim.
