Kulgera

Kulgera is a tiny, starkly beautiful roadhouse settlement on the Stuart Highway, roughly halfway between Alice Springs and the South Australian border. This is the Red Centre at its most raw – endless horizons, red dust, and a sky so big it feels like another country. For self-drive travellers, Kulgera is a welcome pit stop for fuel, a cold drink, and a glimpse of classic outback life before pushing on to Uluru or Coober Pedy.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Kulgera is a stopover, not a destination. Plan for 20–30 minutes to stretch legs, refuel, and grab a snack. If you’re self-driving, it’s a perfect break on the long haul between Alice Springs (about 3 hours north) and the South Australian border (30 minutes south). For a deeper taste, consider an overnight stay at the roadhouse’s basic motel or campground – you’ll appreciate the silence and stars.
