Namatjira Drive is one of the Red Centre's most spectacular scenic routes, a winding 140-kilometre sealed road that snakes through the West MacDonnell Ranges west of Alice Springs. Named after the renowned Arrernte artist Albert Namatjira, this drive offers a vivid journey through ancient gorges, ochre-red cliffs, and ghost gum-lined waterholes. It's a must-do for anyone wanting to experience the raw beauty of the outback without a four-wheel drive — the road is sealed and suitable for all vehicles, though you'll want to take it slow to soak in the ever-changing landscapes.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allocate at least a full day to drive the entire length of Namatjira Drive, stopping at each gorge for short walks and photo opportunities. If you want to hike some of the longer trails (like the Ormiston Pound Walk or the Larapinta Trail sections), plan for two days with an overnight stay at Glen Helen Resort or one of the bush camps. Most travellers tackle it as a day trip from Alice Springs, leaving early to avoid the midday heat and returning by sunset.
