Pine Creek is a historic gold-mining town in the Northern Territory, about 90 minutes south of Darwin. It's a classic outback stopover with a palpable frontier spirit, where corrugated-iron pubs and Chinese heritage sites sit beneath the vast Top End sky. The town's easy-going atmosphere and surrounding landscapes of low hills and paperbark wetlands make it a rewarding detour for anyone driving the Stuart Highway.
Highlights & What to See
- Pine Creek Goldfields Railway – Ride a restored vintage train on a 45-minute journey through the historic goldfields; the commentary brings the 1880s rush to life.
- Miners Park & Museum – A free outdoor museum with original mining machinery, a Chinese temple replica, and informative displays about the town's multicultural past.
- Umbrawarra Gorge Nature Park – A short drive west; swim in the permanent rock pools and follow the walking track through monsoon vine forest.
- Historical Walk – Stroll the main street to see the 1889 Playford Hotel (still serving cold beer), the old bakery, and the post office with its original verandahs.
- Chinese Heritage – Explore the remnants of the Chinese settlement, including the market garden site and a well-preserved joss house (temple).
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is enough to explore the museum, ride the railway (check running days – usually weekends and public holidays), and take a dip at Umbrawarra Gorge. If you're self-driving, plan an overnight stop to soak up the pub atmosphere and visit at a relaxed pace. Most travellers combine Pine Creek with a stay in Katherine or Litchfield National Park.
