Marla
Marla is a tiny, remote roadhouse settlement on the Stuart Highway in the far north of South Australia, just shy of the Northern Territory border. It's a classic outback pit stop—think red dust, endless horizons, and a palpable sense of isolation. For travellers crossing the continent, Marla is a welcome oasis offering fuel, supplies, and a cold beer. The surrounding landscape is starkly beautiful, with spinifex plains and low red ranges that glow at sunrise and sunset.
Highlights & What to See
- Marla Travellers Rest – The heart of the settlement: a roadhouse, motel, and campground all in one. Grab a counter meal, stock up on fuel, and chat with fellow adventurers swapping stories of the highway.
- Indulkana & the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands – Marla is the eastern gateway to the APY Lands. While permits are required to enter, the area is rich in Aboriginal culture and art. The nearby community of Indulkana is known for its vibrant art centre.
- Stargazing – With virtually zero light pollution, the night sky here is a dazzling canopy of stars. Pull over anywhere along the highway and just look up.
- Red Centre landscapes – The drive north towards the NT border takes you through classic outback scenery: gibber plains, saltbush, and the occasional wedge-tailed eagle circling overhead.
Suggested Time to Spend
Marla is a stopover, not a destination. Most travellers pause for 30 minutes to refuel and grab a bite, or stay overnight if they're breaking the long drive between Coober Pedy and Alice Springs. An overnight stay lets you appreciate the outback silence and sunrise over the plains. If you're heading into the APY Lands, budget at least a full day for permits and travel.
