Hidden along the banks of the Katherine River, just a stone’s throw from town, Katherine Hot Springs offers a blissful natural spa experience. These thermal pools, fed by warm, mineral-rich water, sit in a serene bush setting where paperbark trees shade the banks. Unlike many developed hot springs, this one remains largely natural, with a sandy bottom and gentle current—perfect for a soothing soak after a day of exploring the Outback.
Highlights & What to See
- Natural Thermal Pools: Float in the warm, clear water (around 30°C year-round) surrounded by native vegetation. The main pool is deep enough for swimming, while smaller pockets offer quieter spots.
- Scenic River Walk: A short, easy trail follows the Katherine River from the town centre to the springs, passing through riverine forest. Keep an eye out for birdlife, including kingfishers and kites.
- Sunrise or Sunset Soak: Arrive early or late to avoid crowds and experience the changing light filtering through the trees. The water is especially inviting in the cooler dry-season months (April–September).
- Picnic by the River: Several shaded grassy areas near the springs are ideal for a relaxed lunch. Bring a picnic and make a half-day of it.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours soaking and exploring the immediate area. Combine the springs with a morning walk along the river trail and a picnic to fill a leisurely half-day. The springs are open 24 hours and free to access, so you can dip in at dawn or under the stars.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Nitmiluk National Park (Katherine Gorge): A 30-minute drive away, this spectacular gorge system offers canoeing, boat cruises, and bushwalking. The hot springs are a perfect post-hike reward.
- Katherine Town: Explore the town’s museums, art galleries, and the famous Katherine School of the Air. The springs are only a 5-minute drive from the town centre.
- Cutta Cutta Caves Nature Park: About 30 minutes south, these ancient limestone caves feature guided tours through stalactite-filled chambers and resident bats.
- Mataranka Thermal Pool: A 90-minute drive north, this larger thermal spring offers a similar experience with more developed facilities and a swimming hole.
