Batchelor, a small town 100 km south of Darwin, is the gateway to Litchfield National Park and a fascinating slice of Top End history. Once a WWII airbase and later a uranium mining hub, it now offers a relaxed, bushland setting with a quirky museum and easy access to some of the Territory’s best swimming holes and waterfalls. The town’s compact size belies its appeal: you can explore its wartime relics, then be plunging into crystal-clear pools within minutes.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors use Batchelor as a base for 2–3 days to fully explore Litchfield National Park. One day is enough to see the town’s museum and a couple of waterfalls, but to hike, swim and appreciate the park’s diversity, allow at least two full days. If you’re short on time, a day trip from Darwin is possible, but you’ll miss the quiet evenings under the stars.
