Ormiston Gorge and Pound is one of the West MacDonnell Ranges’ most spectacular waterholes and walking destinations. Carved from ancient quartzite, the gorge’s towering red walls frame a permanent swimming hole that glows turquoise in the afternoon light. Beyond the gorge lies the Pound — a natural amphitheatre of rock and spinifex that rewards hikers with sweeping views of the surrounding desert ranges. It’s a quintessential Red Centre experience, combining geology, wildlife, and a sense of timeless isolation.
Highlights & What to See
- Ormiston Gorge waterhole — a deep, clear swimming hole flanked by sheer cliffs; perfect for a cooling dip after a walk (check seasonal conditions).
- Pound Walk (7.5 km loop, 3–4 hours) — the signature circuit that climbs to a saddle overlooking the Pound, then descends through a rocky amphitheatre back to the gorge.
- Ghost Gum Lookout — a short 1.2 km return walk to a viewpoint with iconic ghost gums clinging to the cliffs.
- Riparian Walk (1.2 km loop, 30 min) — an easy, shaded stroll along the creek bed, ideal for spotting birdlife and learning about desert flora.
- Wildlife spotting — black-footed rock-wallabies, red kangaroos, and a variety of birds including zebra finches and spinifex pigeons are common.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend half a day (3–5 hours) to complete the Pound Walk and enjoy a swim. If you’re short on time, the shorter Riparian Walk and a dip in the gorge can be done in 1–2 hours. For photographers, late afternoon light is magical on the gorge walls. Ormiston is also a popular overnight stop for campervans; the campground is basic but well-placed for a sunrise walk.
