Out on the Lasseter Highway, about 50 kilometres east of Yulara, the Remarkable Rocks are a lesser-known but utterly captivating cluster of granite boulders. Sculpted by wind and time, these weathered formations rise from the red desert plain, their surfaces pitted and smoothed into surreal shapes. The lack of crowds makes this a peaceful spot to soak in the vastness of the Outback and contemplate the ancient forces that shaped this land.
Highlights & What to See
- Granite Sculptures: Wander among the boulders, some as large as houses, and marvel at the honeycomb weathering and tafoni formations that give the rocks their otherworldly texture.
- Sunset & Sunrise Views: The rocks glow golden and then deep red as the sun dips or rises over the spinifex-studded plains. It’s a photographer’s dream with minimal light pollution for astrophotography after dark.
- Desert Walking: A short, easy walk leads around the main cluster, but you can also explore the surrounding scrubland. Keep an eye out for desert wildflowers after rain and listen for the calls of spinifex pigeons.
- Aboriginal Cultural Significance: The area is part of the traditional lands of the Pitjantjatjara people. While there are no formal interpretive signs, the rocks hold deep meaning in local Tjukurpa (Dreaming) stories.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for 1–2 hours, ideally timed for late afternoon or early morning when the light is best and temperatures are milder. If you’re keen on astrophotography, a longer evening visit is rewarding. The site is easily accessible from the Lasseter Highway, so it works well as a quick stop between Uluru and Kings Canyon.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park – Just 50 km west, the iconic monolith and domes are a must-see. Combine a visit to Remarkable Rocks with a day at Uluru.
- Kings Canyon (Watarrka National Park) – About 3 hours east, this dramatic sandstone canyon offers epic rim walks and lush palm-filled gorges.
- Mount Conner – Another flat-topped mesa visible from the Lasseter Highway, often mistaken for Uluru from a distance. Worth a photo stop.
- Curtin Springs Station – A working cattle station that offers accommodation, meals, and a chance to see desert wildlife.
