Ormiston Pound is a stunning natural amphitheatre in the West MacDonnell Ranges, offering one of the Northern Territory's most rewarding desert walks. This ancient geological feature, formed over hundreds of millions of years, cradles a ghost gum-lined waterhole that reflects the red cliffs in brilliant contrast. The 7.5 km Ormiston Pound Walk circles the rim and drops into the pound, passing through riverbeds, spinifex plains, and tranquil swimming holes. It's a must-do for hikers, photographers, and anyone wanting to experience the raw beauty of Central Australia.
Highlights & What to See
- Ormiston Pound Walk – A 7.5 km loop (3–4 hours) combining a gorge, creek crossings, and a scramble over the quartzite rim; the view from the top is breathtaking.
- Swimming at the Waterhole – After the walk, cool off in the permanent waterhole beneath red cliffs – a refreshing reward.
- Ghost Gums & River Red Gums – Iconic outback trees line the creek, their white trunks contrasting with the ochre landscape.
- Birdwatching & Wildlife – Look for zebra finches, black-footed rock-wallabies, and peregrine falcons soaring above.
- Geology & Fossils – The pound is a natural amphitheatre formed by folding and erosion; keep an eye out for ancient ripple marks in the rock.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for at least half a day – 3–4 hours for the full loop walk plus time to swim and relax at the waterhole. If you're short on time, a shorter 2 km walk to the waterhole and back is also rewarding. Combine with a picnic lunch; there are shaded tables near the carpark. Morning or late afternoon is best for light and wildlife.
