Mount Hotham, a high-altitude resort in the Victorian Alps, is a year-round playground for outdoor enthusiasts. Despite its name, it's far from the dry heat of the Lasseter Highway—this is Australia's snow country, where winter brings world-class skiing and summer unveils wildflower-dotted hiking trails. The village perches at 1,750 metres, offering panoramic views that stretch to the distant horizon. Whether you're carving powder on the slopes or breathing in crisp alpine air on a bushwalk, Mount Hotham delivers a genuine alpine experience that feels a world away from the red centre.
Highlights & What to See
- Skiing and snowboarding: With over 320 hectares of skiable terrain, Mount Hotham is renowned for its advanced runs and reliable snow. The summit area offers steep chutes and groomed cruisers for all levels.
- Hiking in summer: The Razorback Trail and the walk to the summit of Mount Hotham (1,862 m) reward with wildflowers and sweeping views. The Alpine Walking Track passes through here.
- Great Alpine Road: One of Australia's most scenic drives, this route connects Hotham to Bright and Omeo, winding through snow gums and high plains.
- Mount Hotham Village: A compact, car-free centre with cosy lodges, cafes, and après-ski spots. The Hotham Museum offers a glimpse into the resort's history.
- Stargazing: With minimal light pollution, the alpine sky is a dazzling canvas of stars—especially spectacular on clear winter nights.
Suggested Time to Spend
For a ski holiday, plan at least three to four days to fully explore the mountain and enjoy the village atmosphere. In summer, two days suffice for a couple of solid hikes and a scenic drive along the Great Alpine Road. Day-trippers from Bright (about 1.5 hours away) can experience the highlights, but an overnight stay is recommended to catch sunrise or sunset over the alps.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Bright: A charming town with autumn colours, craft breweries, and access to the Murray River. It's the main gateway to Hotham.
- Falls Creek: Another alpine resort, about 90 minutes away via the Great Alpine Road, with a different ski terrain and summer mountain-biking trails.
- Omeo: A historic gold-mining town on the eastern side of the range, offering heritage buildings and a quieter alternative to the resort hubs.
- Alpine National Park: Surrounding Hotham, this park protects vast wilderness areas perfect for multi-day hikes, 4WD tracks, and wildlife spotting (kangaroos, wombats, and lyrebirds).
