Katherine Outback Experience is a living showcase of the rugged Australian outback, where you can immerse yourself in the traditions of station life, horsemanship, and indigenous culture. Run by the Hodgson family, this working cattle station offers an authentic glimpse into the challenges and beauty of the Northern Territory's red dirt country.
Highlights & What to See
- Stockman Show: Watch skilled riders demonstrate mustering, horse breaking, and whip cracking in a dynamic arena performance.
- Working Dog Display: See talented kelpies and border collies round up livestock with precision and intelligence.
- Horse Riding Experiences: Take a guided trail ride through the station's bushland and along the Katherine River, suitable for beginners to advanced riders.
- Indigenous Cultural Talk: Learn about local Aboriginal traditions, bush tucker, and stories from a Wardaman elder.
- Station Tours: Explore the historic homestead, stockyards, and machinery sheds that tell the story of outback pastoralism.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors allow a full half-day (3–4 hours) to take in the stockman show, interact with the animals, and explore the station. If you want to add a horse ride or deeper cultural tour, plan for a full day. Morning sessions are popular to beat the heat, and the experience is easily combined with a visit to Katherine Gorge or the Hot Springs.
