Geikie Gorge is a stunning natural wonder carved through the ancient limestone of the Napier Range by the Fitzroy River. Located in the southern reaches of the Kimberley region, this gorge offers a peaceful escape with towering cliffs, abundant wildlife, and serene waterways. Unlike many gorges in the area, Geikie Gorge is easily accessible by sealed road, making it a perfect stop on a self-drive journey through the outback.
Highlights & What to See
- Boat Cruises: Guided boat tours glide through the calm waters, offering close-up views of the gorge's impressive 30-metre-high walls and the chance to spot freshwater crocodiles, fish, and birdlife.
- Walking Trails: Several walking tracks, including the popular Geikie Gorge Walk, allow you to explore the gorge's rim and riverbanks, with interpretive signs explaining the geology and Aboriginal significance.
- Wildlife Watching: Keep an eye out for wallabies, dingos, and a variety of birds such as ospreys and brolgas. The gorge is also home to the rare purple-crowned fairy-wren.

- Scenic Picnic Spots: Shaded areas along the river provide idyllic spots for a picnic, with views of the striking red and grey limestone cliffs.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend half a day at Geikie Gorge, which is enough to enjoy a boat cruise and a short walk. If you're keen to explore several trails or simply soak in the atmosphere, a full day allows for a more leisurely pace. The gorge is best visited during the dry season (May to October) when the river is calm and the weather is pleasant.
