Fitzroy Crossing is a rugged outpost on the edge of the Kimberley, where the vast emptiness of the Northern Territory gives way to the dramatic gorges of Western Australia. This tiny town straddles the Fitzroy River and serves as the gateway to some of Australia's most spectacular ancient landscapes. With its red dirt, boab trees, and croc-filled waterways, it feels like the real Australian outback.
Highlights & What to See
- Geikie Gorge National Park – A stunning 30-metre-deep gorge carved through the Devonian reef, best explored by boat or walking trail. Look for freshwater crocodiles and fruit bats.
- Mimal and Mimbi Caves – Guided tours through ancient limestone caves with incredible Aboriginal rock art and crystal-clear pools.
- Fitzroy River – The lifeblood of the region; spot barramundi, birds, and crocs from the bridge or on a cruise.
- Boab Prison Tree – A massive, hollow boab tree with a dark history as a temporary holding place for Aboriginal prisoners.
- Brooking Springs Station – A working cattle station offering farm stays, horse riding, and a glimpse into outback station life.
Suggested Time to Spend
One full day is enough to see Geikie Gorge and the main sights, but two days allow for a deeper exploration of the caves and a relaxed river cruise. If you're self-driving along the Gibb River Road or the Great Northern Highway, Fitzroy Crossing makes a logical overnight stop. Mornings are best for wildlife spotting; afternoons can be scorching, so plan indoor activities like visiting the local art centre.
