Flinders Ranges rise like a great rust-red spine from the arid plains of South Australia, a landscape of ancient geology, dramatic gorges, and rich Aboriginal heritage. This is a place where the earth’s story is written in folded rock layers and where the silence is broken only by the call of a wedge-tailed eagle. For travellers self-driving from the Lasseter Highway, it’s a detour that rewards with some of Australia’s most striking outback scenery.
Highlights & What to See
- Wilpena Pound – A natural amphitheatre of mountains, walk the rim for jaw-dropping views or take a scenic flight over this ancient basin.
- Bunyeroo and Brachina Gorges – Wind through colourful cliffs; look for yellow-footed rock-wallabies and fossils in the geological ‘time tunnel’.
- Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park – Sacred to the Adnyamathanha people, explore Aboriginal rock art sites at Arkaroo Rock and learn about the Dreaming stories.
- Rawnsley Park Station – A working sheep station offering accommodation, bushwalks and stargazing under some of the darkest skies.
- Blinman – Australia’s highest town, with a historic mine tour and a classic outback pub serving hearty meals.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow at least three full days to experience the highlights. Spend the first day exploring Wilpena Pound and its walking trails, the second driving the scenic gorges and visiting Arkaroo Rock, and the third for a flight or a longer hike. If you’re on a self-drive itinerary from Coober Pedy or the Lasseter Highway, this is a perfect two-night stop before continuing south to the Clare Valley or Adelaide.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Coober Pedy – The opal-mining underground town, about 4 hours north, with quirky dugout homes and lunar landscapes.
- Lake Eyre – Australia’s largest salt lake, often dry but spectacular after rain; scenic flights operate from nearby towns.
- Clare Valley – Renowned wine region south of the ranges, perfect for a taste of South Australia’s best rieslings and a relaxing break.
- Mount Remarkable National Park – Rugged gorges and bushwalks, a quieter alternative to Flinders Ranges.
- Port Augusta – The gateway to the outback, with the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden and the Wadlata Outback Centre.
