Winding through the red heart of outback New South Wales, the Darling River Run is a quintessential Australian road trip that traces the meandering course of the Darling River. This epic journey offers a deep dive into the region's rich Indigenous heritage, pioneering history, and starkly beautiful landscapes. For international travellers, it's a chance to experience the real outback – think wide-open skies, ancient river red gums, and friendly country pubs. The route is best tackled by self-drive, allowing you to stop at historic towns, fishing spots, and cultural sites along the way.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow at least 5 to 7 days to fully experience the Darling River Run from Bourke to Wentworth (or vice versa). This gives you time to soak up the atmosphere of each town, go fishing, take short walks, and enjoy the changing scenery. If you're short on time, a 3-day itinerary from Bourke to Menindee covers the highlights, but you'll miss the lower reaches. The road is mostly unsealed in sections, so a 4WD is recommended, especially after rain. Plan to drive no more than 3–4 hours per day to leave ample time for stops.
