Straddling the Lasseter Highway, Cowell is a tiny outpost that feels like the true heart of the Red Centre. This is the last stop before Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, and its red-dirt character and no-fuss pub make it a memorable place to pause, refuel, and soak up the vastness of the outback. The silence here is almost tangible, broken only by the wind and the occasional road train.
Highlights & What to See
- Cowell Pub (Cowell Roadhouse): The town's social hub, serving cold beer, hearty pub meals, and offering a chance to chat with locals and fellow travellers. Don't miss the quirky memorabilia on the walls.
- Stargazing: With virtually no light pollution, Cowell is a prime spot for lying back and marvelling at the Milky Way. The night sky here is a spectacle in itself.
- Red Centre landscape: Walk the short trails around town – the spinifex-dotted sandhills and mulga scrub are quintessential outback scenery. Keep an eye out for red kangaroos at dawn and dusk.
- Camel Farm (Camel Tours): Just west of town, you can get up close to these iconic desert animals. Camel rides and farm tours offer a unique outback experience.
Suggested Time to Spend
Cowell is a quick stop – plan for an hour or two to stretch your legs, grab a meal, and fill your tank. If you're not in a rush, consider staying overnight at the roadhouse campground to experience the incredible darkness of the outback night. Most travellers use it as a lunch or fuel break en route to or from Uluru.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park: The main draw, just 30 minutes further west. Allow at least two days to explore the rock, the domes, and the cultural centre.
- Yulara (Ayers Rock Resort): The resort town with accommodation, restaurants, and the airport – a convenient base for visiting the park.
- Mount Conner (Attila): This flat-topped mesa, often mistaken for Uluru from a distance, is visible from the Lasseter Highway. A scenic photo stop.
- Curtin Springs Station: A working cattle station offering meals, camping, and a chance to see the outback way of life. About 45 minutes east of Cowell.
- Kings Canyon (Watarrka National Park): A 3-hour drive north via the Luritja Road. The rim walk is one of the best in the region, so combine with Cowell for a loop trip.
