Casuarina is a tiny, remote roadhouse settlement on the Lasseter Highway, roughly halfway between the Stuart Highway and Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. This sparse outpost is a welcome pit stop for self-drive travellers crossing the vast red centre, offering fuel, basic supplies, and a glimpse of life on the edge of the desert. The surrounding spinifex plains and mulga woodlands are quintessential Outback scenery, and the silence here is profound.
Highlights & What to See
- Roadhouse stop: Fill up on fuel, grab an ice cream or a cold drink, and stretch your legs after hours of driving. The small store also stocks camping essentials and souvenirs.
- Desert landscapes: Pull over just outside the settlement to photograph the endless horizons, red dirt, and hardy desert oaks (casuarina trees) that give the place its name.
- Stargazing: At night, the lack of light pollution makes this an incredible spot to see the Milky Way and shooting stars – perfect for a break in a self-drive itinerary.
- Birdwatching: Look for zebra finches, spinifex pigeons, and wedge-tailed eagles soaring overhead in the early morning or late afternoon.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers only need 15–30 minutes to refuel and use the facilities. If you’re camping nearby (there’s a basic campground), you could linger for a night to experience the desert sunset and sunrise. For a quick stop, budget half an hour; for an overnight stay, plan a full afternoon and morning.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park – the iconic red monolith and domes are about 200 km west, a must-visit for any Outlander.
- Kings Canyon (Watarrka National Park) – a spectacular gorge and rim walk, roughly 250 km northwest via the Luritja Road.
- Erldunda – a roadhouse at the junction of the Stuart and Lasseter highways, offering another fuel stop and the Desert Park.
- Yulara – the resort town near Uluru, with accommodation, dining, and cultural experiences.
- Mount Conner (Artilla) – a flat-topped mesa visible from the Lasseter Highway, often mistaken for Uluru from a distance.
